I finished reading The Road by Cormac McCarthy last week. He's known for writing No Country for Old Men and All the Pretty Horses. The Road was suggested to me by a college buddy when I was working on my reading list for the year (which I've ventured from a little bit). It was also one of my recommendations on goodreads.com I am probably one of the last people to get hip to this story because it was made into a movie in 2009 staring the one and only Viggo Mortenson. Here's the IMDB page for the movie.
It is a beautifully written, dark, post apocalyptic story about a nameless father and son traveling south in search of the coast. They don't really know what they'll find when they get there but they know that have to keep moving. It is some of the most beautiful insights I have read in a long time as well as the most heart-wrenching, disturbing images. If you enjoyed The Book of Eli or I am Legend you will enjoy the story behind The Road. I haven't got up enough courage to watch the movie yet, so I don't know how well it matches the book . . . but I would make a bet that the book is better (isn't it always).
Next on the list, something MUCH more lighthearted, The Friday Night Knitting Club!
