Beach Bum

We just got back from Ocean Isle Beach, NC. It was a vacay with the boyfriend's family. Our first, of many, with each of us sharing a piece of our childhood. He took me to Calabash and the pier. I took him to Southport (where they filmed I Know What You Did Last Summer and Dawson's Creek) and the Provision Company! (the website doesn't do the crab cakes justice!) The only problem . . . I didn't get a single picture!

As many of you know, I'm not typical. Therefore my beach read was not typical. Instead of the typical Nicholas Sparks (or Karen Kingsbury in B's family), I sprang for Abraham Lincoln:Vampire Hunter. Seth Grahame-Smith is one of my new favorite authors. You may remember his previous New-York Times Best seller, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

Grahame-Smith takes a story that most of us are familiar with and turns it on it's side. In the case of Abe Lincoln, he suggests that there are journals written by Lincoln that tell of his personal history of chasing down and killing vampires. This story was recently adapted into film (which is actually where I first became familiar with the story) Abraham Lincoln:Vampire Hunter Movie. The story isn't neccissariliy historically correct, but it sure makes you think about things. I was even able to share a few stories with my somewhat reluctant boyfriend, who happened to enjoy the head chopping and gushing blood. If you're a civil war buff, I'd love to hear your thoughts on this story (after you've read the book).

So, this story is not a a typical beach read but it's worth checking out if you're interested in history, suspense and vampires! Next on the list (about 1/4 of the way finished) Jasper Fforde's first book in the Nursery Crimes series, The Big Over Easy. Where I will hopefully find out who pushed H.Dumpty over that wall.
